News that a vault in New Zealand has turned up some unknown Mabel Normand silents, and a "lost" supporting role for Chaplin in some rare footage, can give us hope. Some of the footage, which is reported to be in "dire" condition, also has appearances of Babe "lookalike" Charles Puffy, one of the aliases of a well-known rotund Hungarian movie star, who went to Hollywood in 1924. Discoveries like this rekindle hopes of finding Hats Off in an obscure vault somewhere, or in someone's attic, wine cellar or servants' quarters. We must not give up hope.
