Stan can`t get to sleep because of his toothache, and is keeping Ollie awake with his pain. Ollie tries to help, but not with much success. Therefore a trip to the dentist is the only solution.
Stan goes to the dentist and is very nervous. Ollie reassures him that it`s alright and has one of his own teeth extracted by mistake. Because he is not too impressed by this, he causes himself and Stan to inhale a huge amount of laughing gas, causing disruption to the traffic outside and creating havoc for police officer Edgar Kennedy.
This is a good silent film. Although I`m not too keen on the silent stuff, I like this one. There are nice pieces of comedy, with Stan`s bandage, as it curls each time Ollie prods Stan`s mouth. You can almost feel the pain he`s suffering. Ollie`s attempt to pull the tooth with the string on the door is good, as Stan thinks he`s got the tooth out, instead he has pulled off the door knob.
I like the sequence with Charlie Hall, as Stan causes a fight by kicking him up the arse and Ollie cops the blame.
The visit to the dentist is very scary, as Stan hears that a chap had his jaw broken by the dentist, and another person is carried out on a stretcher. No wonder people are afraid of the dentist!
There is also the scene in which Ollie has a tooth pulled by mistake. This scene is obviously the one they later re-used in the film "Pardon Us".
The laughing gas scenes are great. I`m very fond of the `Stan Laughing` routines in the sound films, but you still laugh as much even though Stan is laughing silently. If there could have been sound in just this sequence alone, the film would be at least a 9 rating.. (7/10)
