This story made the BBC's news site yesterday... (thanks to Agnes for pointing this out) Site agreed for comic duo statueA home has been agreed for a bronze statue of Laurel and Hardy, in the Cumbrian town where one half of the comic duo was born. The tribute, created by sculptor Graham Ibbeson, has been in storage since 2005 while a site was found in Ulverston, where Stan Laurel was born in 1890. The Laurel and Hardy fan club raised £60,000 for the statue. South Lakeland Council has confirmed it will be installed as part of a revamp of the town's County Square in 2009. The statue captures the silver screen legends leaning against a fully working lamppost with a dog yapping at their feet. It will be positioned on the pavement outside the Coronation Hall theatre, where the duo made a public appearance on the balcony in 1947. Stan Laurel was born in the town before moving to the US in 1916. Mr Ibbeson also created the Eric Morecambe statue, which was unveiled in Morecambe, Lancashire, in 1999. Access to the County Square is being upgraded as part of a £400,000 scheme, with funding from the council, English Heritage and the Friends of the Laurel and Hardy Statue group. Anyone attending the unveilingon the Sunday are advised to get there in plenty of time. The unveiling will take place at 3pm but Eric Woods suggests arriving soon before then. Some roads around the area will be closed but access to the car parks will be available.
There will be street entertainment before the unveiling ceremony, so be there in good time folks!
You don't want to miss this.

From the Ulverston Local Website also mentions about the Museum move www.ulverstonlocal.co.uk/comic_dodd_honoured_to_be_unveiling_stan_laurel_statue_1_533791?referrerPath=homeAlso , just watched Granada Reports and they showed the statue arriving in Ulverston and being put in front of the Coronation Hall , all very mysterious as its wrapped up and nobody was allowed to see it , all they could show was a piece of Stans foot , nice piece with Graham Ibbetson saying what a pleasure it was to work on the Statue during the winter and it kept him happy just looking at it , the only downside of the article is there was no mention of who actually paid for , and is donating the Statue to Ulverston maybe better coverage on the day , I really cant wait

Nice to see the statue's getting some good publicity. Looking at the photos of it wrapped up makes it more exciting now. I'm sure on the 19th April, all of us sons will be very proud to see it unveiled.
Also, Jessop told me there was a bit on the news about it the other night. Not seen it but all being well, we'll have the newsreel to show on Wednesday.
