Born Annie May Busch,
20th January 1897
in Melbourne, Australia
Made famous for her role as Ollie`s wife in several films, most notably, "Sons of the Desert". Although Mae Busch stands out as the most recognisable female actress in L&H films, she only appeared in thirteen films with them.
Mae Busch came from a musical background, but took to the stage as a vaudeville comedienne. She made her film debut in 1912, a film called "The Agitator". This led to work with Mack Sennett in several comedies, including a film with Charley Chase, "Settled at the Seaside". (Later she appeared as Charley Chase`s sister in "Sons of the Desert")
Mae Busch continued in her film career working with various directors, and even played alongside Harry Houdini in "Grim Game" (1925).
In 1926 Mae Busch starred in her first Laurel & Hardy film, "Love `em and weep", in which she played James Finlayson`s ex-wife.
Mae was married three times and is rumoured to have had an affair with Mack Sennett, which is apparantly why she stopped working for him, as Mack`s fiance found out about the alleged affair.
Mae died on 19th April 1946 after suffering a long illness. She is now remembered at every Laurel & Hardy meeting/convention during the loyal toast.
"Mae Busch, who is eternally ever popular"
