Stan & Ollie arrive at the hotel `The Mariners Rest`, which is run by Walter `Mugsy` Long. After an unpleasant encounter with Mugsy, they leave the hotel in a hurry.
Later, Ollie meets an old friend who organises a boxing fight for him. Ollie isn`t keen, so tells Stan he`ll be the one fighting.
When Stan gets into the ring, he his horrified when he realises his opponent is `Mugsy` Long.
Any Old Port is a good piece of Laurel & Hardy`s work. It starts off well with a nice opening scene with Stan throwing a large bag over his shoulder and whacking Ollie with it. Well timed and very funny.
The film moves on pleasantly to their arrival at `Walter "Mugsy" Long`s hotel with a great line from stan...
STAN: We`d like a room with a southern explosion
As they check in to the hotel, we see a re-used gag as Stan takes ages to sign the guestbook, causing a lot of mess, by accidentally sharpening a pen and then spilling an ink pot all over the book. Eventually he manages to sign his name `X` (as in `Double Whoopee`, previously). This is a very good scene with Stan & Ollie working great together and very funny.
More funny moments include an incident in which Stan & Ollie take on Walter Long at the hotel. They each take off their jackets and roll their sleeves up (even though Stan is wearing a short sleeved shirt!).
Another gag that was to be re-used is one where Walter Long tries to retrieve a key from Stan & Ollie. This sequence is very reminiscent to the `getting the deed` sequence from `Way Out West`, except Stan isn`t tickled this time.
The film progresses to another of Stan`s mannerisms, as he cries like a baby after he`s told of the boxing fight he`s about to partake in. The boxing ring scenes are very funny, especially when Stan & Ollie climb into the ring and Stan doesn`t have a clue what to do. Another re-used gag crops up here as Stan does his classic `ear wiggling` trick. It`s nice to see Stan`s confidence level change when he spots that he has been given a `loaded` boxing glove, therefore defeating `Mugsy Long`, the referee and a member of security.
A very good film this one. Well I like it anyway! It moves along nicely and contains some very funny scenes. (7/10)
